Friction stir welding apparatus comprises: (a) rotating chucks (11, 13) for chucking opposing ends of the abutted members (1-3) while axially pressing them; (b) an abutted member supporting roller (6b, 7b, 8b); (c) a drive member (12) for rotating the abutted members about their axis; and (d) a joining device (19) having a rotating probe (21) adjacent an abutted portion (22, 23) which softens and stirs the abutted portion to join the members in accordance with their rotation.
