The protective element has multi-row gasbag chambers. The gasbag chambers (14) are in open connection with the distribution chamber (13). They are in two rows one behind the other in the impact direction of the user. The gasbag chambers in the individual rows are offset from each other so that a chamber of one row is in the interstice between two chambers of the other row.
