A pharmaceutical composition comprising a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for the treatment of decreased blood pressure to below 120 mmHg systolic, symptomatic hypotension, cardiogenic shock occurring during an acute coronary syndrome or cardiogenic shock occurring during or after coronary artery bypass surgery or during or after any other cardiac surgery. Preferred inhibitors are N< omega >-substituted-L-arginine compounds such as L-NMMA and L-NAME. A method for treating patients suffering from the above conditions comprising administering an effective amount of a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor is also disclosed. |
