An electrostatic filter ioniser contains electrically-charged contaminant particles separated from the airflow by a downstream collector. The ioniser comprises an earthed frame and a tensionable ionisation grid on insulators. The rectangular frame has a pair of parallel transverse carriers, and two sidescreen sheets lying along the direction of flow between them. Behind the transverse carrier, two anchor beams carry the grid of ionising wires and their tensioning springs, located between the sidescreens. In this novel arrangement the insulators are mounted on the outsides of the outer side sheets, and the anchor beams are fixed in the plane of the side sheets, on insulators.
