PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a visual contrast feeling by performing the adjustment of contrast and a light source with keeping correlation. SOLUTION: A feature detecting part 11 detects the MAX, the MIN and the APL of an input video signal. A control data generating part 12 calculates a Gain amplifying the difference between the MAX and the MIN to the width of the dynamic range and an Offset giving a DC level shifting amount with which the input video signal to be amplified by the Gain is kept within the output dynamic range of a DC level adjusting part 13B. A signal amplitude adjusting part 13A amplifies the input video signal according to the Gain on the basis of the APL. A DC level adjusting part 13B level shifts the input video signal posterior to the amplification according to the Offset. A light source control part 16 controls a light source 18 so that a visual luminance level on a screen becomes to be equal to the luminance level of the input signal based on the Offset.
