PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a surface coated metallic sheet having a film excellent in corrosion resistance and substitutable for a chromate coated metallic sheet and to provide a method for producing it. SOLUTION: This is a surface coated metallic sheet in which films of plural layers have been formed on a metallic sheet or a plate metallic sheet, in which the film of the lowest layer among the films contains Si base and Li base inorganic compds. so as to control the molar ratio of Si/Li to 5 to <36 and does not substantially contain Cr. Furthermore, the method for producing the surface coated metallic sheet includes a stage in which a metallic sheet or a plated metallic sheet is coated with a treating soln. contg. Si base and Li base inorganic compounds so as to control the molar ratio of Si/Li to 5 to <36 without being applied with chromate treatment, and drying is executed to form a film of the lowest layer.
