PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-efficiency organic EL element having high luminance and a long lifetime and capable of low-voltage drive. SOLUTION: This organic EL element comprises at least a positive electrode 2, an organic luminescent zone 3 adjacent to the positive electrode 2, and a negative electrode 5. The positive electrode 2 is treated with ultraviolet irradiation in a wavelength range of 100-200 nm. By using an element, having the organic luminescent zone 3 adjacent to the positive electrode 2 treated with the ultraviolet irradiation in the wavelength range of 100-200 nm, an organic EL element having high luminance, long service life and high efficiency, and allows low-voltage drive is obtained.
