In a method of treating an aluminum dross residue by heating the aluminum dross residue within a heating furnace while supplying an oxidizing gas, a pair of electrodes 30, 40 are arranged opposite to each other within a furnace body 1 so that an electric arc is generated between the both to heat the furnace body 1, the fu rnace body 1 is heated to a prescribed reaction temperature in the state keeping an in ert gas atmosphere, the oxidizing gas is supplied into the furnace while rotating the fu rnace body 1 around its own axis to heat the content, the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas from the furnace is measured, and the heating treatment is terminate d on the basis of the measured value. According to this method, aluminum nitride o r the like in an aluminum dross residue can be oxidized and removed with a minimum heating, and exhaust gas can be also minimized.
