PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent yawing of a metal element while absorbing misalignment by devising the shape of main faces of the metal element. SOLUTION: In the cross section near the locking edge of a metal element 32 used for a metal belt for a continuously variable transmission, a pair of protruding parts 46, 46 are formed at both lateral ends of a front side main face 40f opposed to a front side metal element 32, and a flat face 45 is formed at a rear side main face 40r opposed to a rear side metal element 32. The contact of the protruding parts 46, 46 and flat face 45 allows the metal element 32 to be wound in a correct position onto a pulley without yawing. As a result, not only damage is prevented, but also the metal part of the metal belt can laterally slide to absorb misalignment between a drive pulley and a driven pulley.
