PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance print effect by generating second image data sequentially based on first image data, storing the generated second image data and printing an index image based on the stored second image data. SOLUTION: Under print mode, first image data D1 is fed from a personal computer 2 through an interface 4 and a bus 6 to a control section 7. According to an index image generating program, the control section 7 subjects the first image data D1 fed from the personal computer 2 through the interface 4 to contraction at a specified rate to produce second contracted image data D2 which are written sequentially in an index image memory 13 in a specified format. According to the method, print time can be shortened by such a time as required for designating and reading out the first image data D1.
