PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a spherical carrier for carrying a catalyst which is made of a silica-magnesia composition or a silica-alumina- magnesia composition and has approximately the same fine pore structure as the fine pore structure of a silica-magnesia hydrate paste or a silica-alumina- magnesia hydrate paste to be used as a main raw material, an even spherical shape and smooth surface, and uniform quality from the outer surface to the inner part. SOLUTION: A slurry with a controlled concentration and produced by adding and mixing a polysaccharide solution to and with a silica-magnesia hydrate paste or a silica-alumina-magnesia hydrate paste produced by adding alumina hydrate to a silica-magnesia hydrate paste is dropwise titrated to a solution containing a polyvalent metal ion to form a spherical hydrogel, the hydrogel is aged, washed, and dried and then calcined.
