PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous recording by obtaining data related to the card- like recording medium housed in a tray before actually performing recording. SOLUTION: In a recoring apparatus for applying recording to card-like recording media one by one, data to be recorded is formed and a plurality of the card-like recording media are housed in a tray 104 and a recording medium having data such as the size or number of the recording media recorded thereon by a bar code is placed thereon. The data recorded on the recording medium placed on the uppermost part of the tray is read by a bar code reader 106 before the recording operation of a printer unit 103 is started and recording operation is controlled on the basis of the read data.
