PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spring constant variable mechanism dispensing with a large rotatory-operating force in a hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: When one occupant is in a vehicle, an insert-through part 37b of an annular stopper 37 is set to be positioned coaxially with a cam part 33b of a cam cylinder 33. When a hydraulic shock absorber 10 is compressed in this state, the cam part 33b of the cam cylinder 33 enters the insert-through part 37b of the annular stopper 37, and a main spring 26 and a sub-spring 27 are both compressed to obtain a soft spring constant. In the case of two occupants being in the vehicle, the annular stopper 37 is rotated to set a locking part to be positioned coaxially with the cam part 33b of the cam cylinder 33. When the hydraulic shock absorber 10 is compressed in this state, the cam part 33b of the cam cylinder 33 abuts on the locking part to impede the compression of the sub-spring 27 to thereby obtain a hard spring constant of only the main spring 26.
