PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of a cellulose acetate giving little insol. component and showing a good filtration character when a soln. is made therefrom. SOLUTION: In the production method of a cellulose acetate wherein a cellulose is a feed, acetate anhydrate is an acetylating agent, acetic acid is a solvent, and sulfuric acid is a catalyst, water content in the reaction system during neutralization process after acetylation is controlled not less than 0.1 wt.% but less than 18 wt.%, and after decomposition of unreacted acetic acid anhydrate in the neutralization reaction the water content is controlled not less than 0.1 wt.% but less than 18 wt.%.
