SOLUTION: Air to be treated containing nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is treated, for example, in a photocatalytic reaction tank 14 to oxidize NO by photocatalytic action so that a ratio of NO2 in air to be treated becomes 20% or more and, subsequently, NO and NO2 are adsorbed with an adsorbent 18 containing TiO2 as a main component in an adsorption reaction tank 17 to lower the concn. of nitrogen oxide(NOx) in air to be treated. In this removal method of nitrogen oxide in the atmosphere, a shading plate 19 is disposed between the photocatalytic reaction tank 14 and the adsorption reaction tank 17 to prevent the incidence of ultraviolet rays on the adsorbent 18.
