PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To write a picture to a storing/displaying means without being affected by an optical anisotropy even though a light transmissible original has the optical anisotropy by irradiating the light transmissible original after converting nonpolarized light from light source light into polarized light having a specified polarization axis by a polarizing/converting means. SOLUTION: A picture display device 1 is provided with the storing/displaying means 10 such as a spatial optical modulation element to store a picture projected and to display a stored picture, and projecting means 13, 4, 3, 8 and 9 to project the picture formed of light transmitted through the light transmissible original to the storing displaying means by irradiating the light transmissible original 2 such as photographic film with the light source light. In this case, the projecting means is provided with the polarizing/converting means 12 to convert the light source light into the polarized light having the polarization axis facing the lateral direction or vertical direction of the light transmissible original and to irradiate the light transmissible original.
