PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically select a display language for an on-screen display function in matching with a district in use. SOLUTION: An operating voltage detection circuit 14 decides a voltage of a commercial AC power supply by detecting a DC voltage from a power supply rectifier circuit 11 and gives data denoting the decision result to a microcomputer 15. The microcomputer 15 selects a language to be displayed on a television screen on the basis of the detection result by the operating voltage detection circuit 14 and reads on-screen character information in the language selected from a memory 16 on the basis of key entry from a key entry means 17 and gives the information to a character generation circuit 18 on the basis of the key entry from a key entry means 17. The character generating circuit 18 converts the received on-screen character information into a video signal for on-screen display and gives the converted signal to an on-screen synthesis circuit 24 as described later.
