At least the head part (16) of the functional element is hollow and has substantially the same outer diameter as the shank part (14), thus no flange. The end of the head part remote from the shank can be formed with swaging and riveting features for fitting into metal plate. Independent claim describes method for producing connection between functional element and sheet metal part by punching through the plate on a matrix and shaping the rivet edge round the downwardly drawn hole edge.
