A system for assisting hard handoffs between communications systems S1, S2 in a mobile phone system is disclosed. A mobile station M1, M2, M3 moving from an originating system S1 to a destination system S2 attempts to acquire a base station C1 - C5 in the destination system. If it fails to do so, a set of parameter data is transmitted from the mobile station to the system S1. System S1 uses the parameter data to generate a search list of alternative base stations within the system S2. The mobile phone then attempts to acquire one of the base stations in the system S2. The parameter data transmitted by the mobile station may include the signal energy of pilot signals from system S2.
