PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to automatically control power consumption during continued discharge by controlling not to exceed it by arranging steps for impressing erase pulses for disabling a part of discharge continuing pulses at prescribed points in time during the continued discharge period of each sub- field. SOLUTION: A method is adopted, by which a new erase period 100 is inserted in a continued discharge period 30. This new erase period 100 interrupts the emission of discharge continuing pulses impressed for the latter half of the continued discharge period 30 of each sub-field. Power exhaust can be controlled by adjusting the length of the continued discharge period of a sub-field in such a manner. Concerning the discharge continuing pulses impressed after this APC continued discharge period, wall discharges are erased by the energy- saving erase pulses 100 to interrupt the continued discharge, so the period comes to a standstill period 200. Therefore, since the continued discharge is interrupted only for this standstill period 200 during the original continued discharge period, the display is decreased in the brightness but the power is saved by the portion.
