PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an air vent disc from being erroneously assembled in a hydraulic tensioner. SOLUTION: A hydraulic tensioner is composed of a housing having a chamber, a hollow plunger 3 slidably inserted into the chamber, a spring 4 for energizing the plunger 3 in the direction in which the plunger is projected, and an air vent disc 10 provided inside the plunger 3. The air vent disc 10 has disc-like first, second parts. In the first part, a groove as a ventilation passage, and a through hole are formed. In the second part, a hole 16 formed in the center, and plural grooves radially extending from the center and opening in the outer peripheral surface, are formed. The outside diameter(d) of the second part 12 is made smaller than the inside diameter of an opening 31a of the tip part 31 of the plunger.
