PURPOSE: To prevent image pickup sensitivity from being deteriorated without deficiency of signal charge amounts by summing signal charges of a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements placed at a prescribed period in a longitudinal direction in the execution of interleaving reading so as to enhance an output speed of picture data in the interleaving reading. CONSTITUTION: In the case of executing interleaving reading, a drive control circuit controls an operation of applying a voltage to a vertical transfer electrode 104 from a vertical drive circuit so as to allow a vertical CCD 102 to read signal voltage of a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements 101 in mutually different timings. Then the signal charge read at a pre-stage is transferred longitudinally to the vertical CCD 102 before reading the signal charges of a post-stage, and the vertical CCD 102 synthesizes signals read from the plurality of photoelectric conversion elements 101 in this transfer process. In the case of executing the interleave reading, the signal charges of the photoelectric conversion element 101 placed at a prescribed period in the longitudinal direction are summed in the operation control.
