The use of an opioid analgesic and a retardant material in the manufacture of an oral sustained release dosage form that provides a time to maximum plasma concentration (Tmax) from about 2 hours to about 8 hours and a maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) which is at least about 2.26 times the plasma level of the opioid in a patient at 24 hours after a single administration of the dosage form, for the treatment of pain.
