PURPOSE: A method to copy a compact disc automatically is provided. CONSTITUTION: A read/write disc drive has one copy button. By depressing the copy button, copy software is started, a compute system (100) is evaluated, the number of CD drives (120, 122 and 128) which can be used in the computer system is determined, an arbitrary CD loaded on an arbitrary CD drive is evaluated and the type and format of the CD are determined. A prompt is transmitted to a user in accordance with the information and the user is guided and commanded to take proper steps to complete the copy process. The copy buttons have respectively different functions. For instance, a music CD can be copied by one copy button and a data CD can be copied by another button. An enhanced CD or DVD can be copied by another button.
