摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration in mechanical strength of a lead wire made of molybdenum in a primary pinch-seal part. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing an arc tube comprises a primary pinch-sealing process, in which an electrode assembly A made up by integrally series-connecting an electrode rod 6, molybdenum foil 7 and a lead wire 8a made of molybdenum, is inserted from one opening end of a glass tube W with a chamber part w2 formed in the longitudinal middle thereof so that an end of the electrode rod 6 projects into the chamber part w2, an oxidation prevention gas is introduced into the glass tube W from the other opening end of the glass tube W, and a zone containing the molybdenum foil 7 of the glass tube W is pinch-sealed. The opening end of the glass tube W on the electrode assembly insertion side is inserted into a gas chamber (pipe 50) supplied with the oxidation prevention gas, and the glass-tube opening end is primarily pinch-sealed while it is kept in an oxidation prevention gas atmosphere. The oxidation of the lead wire 8a is prevented because it is kept in the oxidation prevention gas atmosphere not only while the primary pinch-sealing process goes on but also while the electrode assembly (the lead wire 8a) maintains a high temperature after the completion of the primary pinch-sealing process.
