PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gasket having a good sealing performance and having a stable seal performance over a long period by forming string shaped packing layers composed of specified yarns on both end surfaces of an axial direction of a gasket body made of expanded graphite. SOLUTION: A gasket 10 is provided with a gasket body 11 formed in a ring shape and made of expanded graphite. A tapered surface 12 is formed on a lower surface of an inner circumferential side of the gasket body 11. A string shaped packing layer 15 is formed on an upper end surface 14 of an axial direction of the gasket body 11. A string shaped packing layer 17 is formed on a lower end surface 16 of an axial direction of the gasket body 11. Those string shaped packing layers 15, 17 are composed by braiding or twisting carbon fiber, inorganic fiber, or organic fiber. In this case, ceramic fiber, silica fiber, or the like is used as the inorganic fiber. Aramid fiber is used as the organic fiber.
