Microstrip antenna, with helical co-axial linear radiating element below microstrip

A microstrip antenna 1 is mounted on a dielectric substrate 1c which separates it from a conductive plate 4. A linear radiating element 2 is wrapped helically below the conductive plate so that it is coaxial with the microstrip antenna. The upper ends of the helically wrapped element 2 are connected to the conductive plate by DC or capacitative coupling. The antenna is said to be useful for use in communications with a low or intermediate orbiting satellite.
