The compression method associates with each block of digital data a coding technique chosen from among a set (E) of admissible coding techniques, using a choice criterion (E2). The choice criterion is a function which optimises the flow rate or the distortion characterising the coding configuration (E3), under the constraints of a particular computing resource.
