PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently selecting an optical fiber base material so that the cutoff wavelength, mode field diameter, dispersion characteristic and bending characteristic of a single mode optical fiber are respectively within a desired numerical value range only by using two parameters, that is, estimated values of a cutoff wavelength and a mold field diameter. SOLUTION: According to this method, a single mode optical fiber base material is selected so that the cutoff wavelength, mode field diameter, dispersion characteristic, or bending loss characteristic of the single mode optical fiber is within a designated numerical value range. At this time, the method for selecting the single mode optical fiber base material is to select the optical fiber base material taking R obtained by multiplication of the cutoff wavelength and the mode field diameter as a parameter. |
