PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reproduce the fine projected and recessed form of an optical object by clear color contrast as needed by an image processing without depending on an actual pigment endoscope inspection method. SOLUTION: An electronic endoscope is provided with a scope and video color signals are prepared based on color pixel signals for one frame successively read from a solid-state image pickup element provided on the distal end. By comparison means 58 and 60, the signal level value of a specified color pixel signal among the color pixel signals for one frame is compared with the average signal level value of the color pixel signals around the specified color pixel signal. Corresponding to the compared result of the comparison means, by color balance change means 62 and 64, the signal level value of the specified color pixel signal is appropriately changed and the color balance of the color pixel signals for one frame is changed.
