A method and apparatus for authenticating a light intensity pattern comprising an optical means for directing a pulsed light source at a diffracted image pattern at frame rate intervals, a sensor means to detect said diffracted image pattern on a pixel basis, a memory means for storing an authentic pattern in the format of a pixel array and a data processing means for receiving a detected pattern and for assigning the pixels on a pixel-by-pixel basis.
