摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent decrease in the voltage retention rate and decrease in the display quality by specifying the weight of the spacer to the weight of the liquid crystal layer and specifying the amount of impurities eluted from the spacer. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is equipped with a liquid crystal layer held between a pair of insulating substrates and with a spherical spacer present between the pair of insulating substrates. The spacer consists of polymer particles containing styrene monomer,. units and crosslinks by siloxane coupling. The surface of the spacer contains graft polymer chains to improve the adhesion property, and the spacer has a surface treated layer having long-chain alkyl groups to improve the alignment property of liquid crystal molecules. The weight ratio of the spacer to the weight of the liquid crystal layer is specified to <=0.31%. When the spacer is incorporated by 1% in pure water, the proportions of methacrylamides and formic acid eluted are specified to <=2.0 ppm and <=3.0 ppm, respectively.
