PURPOSE: Disclosed is an image reader capable of opening/closing a cover in a plurality of directions relative to a device main body. CONSTITUTION: An image reader has a device main body having a document placing part and a scanner mechanism(21), and a cover(30) for covering the document placing part. The cover(30) is constructed so as to be opened/closed around a straight line in a first direction in a substantially flat plane on a paper placing face. Also, the cover(30) is constructed so as to be partly or entirely opened/closed around a straight line in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the straight line in the first direction. Further, the cover(30) is constructed so that when the device is installed on a desk, a choice between a lateral placing position where the document placing face is substantially parallel to the surface of the desk and a vertical placing position where it is substantially perpendicular to the surface of the desk can be made. This makes it possible to choose optimum placement according to an installation space and usage.
