The system includes transmission of packets to all receivers, with filtering on reception to identify required packets. The procedure for transmission of data packets between packet diffusion transmitter (101) and a number of receivers (104) uses packets which each carry operational address information within the packet. Each receiver receives all the packets and effects an address filtering to select and use the packets which are addressed the specific receiver. The filtering is carried out only on the data address. Packets are transmitted using MPEG2 format, although the address filtering may be carried out in parallel for a number of different address formats. The filtering processes may be interlaced in time. In the reading of packets, a jump is made through the reading process in order to reach the required address information quickly.
