PURPOSE: Provided is the new protein containing a specific amino acid sequence, having (β,β-carotene 15',15'-dioxygenase activity, and useful for diagno ses, industrial production of vitamin A, creation of vitamin A-productive transgenic plants, or the like. CONSTITUTION: The new protein contains an amino acid sequence of the formula or more than 60% in homology with the formula and having (β,β-carotene 15',15'-dioxygenase activity. The protein or the nucleic acid sequence encoding the protein is useful for diagnoses, industrial production of vitamin A, creation of transgenic plants for producing vitamin A in fruits and plants, and various fields limitlessly including gene therapies. The protein is obtained by the following procedure: a cDNA library is made by a conventional method from chicken duodenum poly A+ RNA, and then screened through the consideration of retinoic acid resulted from cleavage of β-carotene, and the resulting gene is integrated into a vector and then expressed in host cells. |
