A graft or tissue implant comprises cells having a positive selectable marker operably linked to a tissue- or cell-specific expression element introduced therein. The cells of the implant can also comprise a negative selectable marker which can be a gene encoding products involved in programmed cell death or apoptosis such as the p53 gene. The cells can be neurones and the positive selectable marker can be neomycin phosphotransferase, hygromycin phosphotransferase, xanthineguanidine phosphoribosyl transferase or the herpes simplex virus type I thymidine kinase.
