PURPOSE: A nematic liquid crystal composition for a TN LCD having low threshold value voltage, excellent switching time, steepness and angle dependence by including twisted nematic, super twisted nematic and chemicals appended below. CONSTITUTION: The displays comprise (A) 20-90 wt.% of a liquid crystal component composed of a compound having at least 1.5 of an induction anisotropy including a compound of formula I wherein R3 is a 2-7C alkenyl, (B) 10-80 wt.% of a liquid crystal component composed of a compound having -1.5 to +1.5 of induction anisotropy including a compound of formula II wherein R1 and R2 are each a 1-12C alkyl or the like; L is H or F, (C) 0-20 wt.% of a liquid crystal component having an induction anisotropy of below -1.5, and (D) an optically active component in an amount to give the ratio of layer thickness to a natural pitch of a chiral nematic liquid crystal mixture of about 0.2 to 1.3 and has 0-30 degree pretilt angle between the major axis of molecule on a substrate surface and the substrate surface and 22.5°to 600°twist angle.
