Method includes establishing estimation of efficiency of combustion of different available modes taking into consideration information relative to the rotation regime and the power of engine (1), with the accelerator pedal position and to the temperature of engine and the exhaust gas temperatures, and then controlling the choice of priority combustion mode from this estimation of efficiency of combustion of different available modes. An Independent claim is also included for the controlling apparatus.
