A first controllable secondary air feed (22) opens out into the exhaust gas channel between the adsorber and the oxidation catalyst. Preferred Features: The secondary air feed has a valve (26) controlled by a controller (24). A temperature measuring element (34) is arranged between the main catalyst and the adsorber. The secondary air feed is controlled by a controller in such a way that an exhaust gas composition stream, a number of revolutions and/or a load of the I.C. engine and a temperature are evaluated before the adsorber.
