Modifying a plastics surface for immobilizing biomolecules comprises covalently bonding a copolymer to the surface, where the copolymer is derived from a monomer (I) having one or more binding sites for the biomolecules and a monomer (II) having no specific binding sites for the biomolecules, where (I) and (II) undergo no nonspecific interactions with the biomolecules. An Independent claim is also included for a surface-modified plastics product comprising a hydrophilic copolymer derived from (I) and (II) covalently bonded to its surface.
