Determining the charge of a filter (2) in the exhaust gas pipe (4) of vehicles comprises measuring the pressure in the pipe before the filter, measuring the amount of air drawn in, and evaluating the charge of the filter from the pressure in the pipe and the composition of the air drawn in. An Independent claim is also included for a device for determining the charge of a filter comprising a pressure sensor (14), an air composition measurer (6), and a computer between the air composition measurer and the pressure sensor to calculate the charge of the filter.
