The Otto-cycle engine with direct fuel-injection has two or more inlet (2) and one or more outlet (5) passages in the cylinder head (13), the combustion chamber (15) beign formed between the piston crown (8) and the head underside. A sparking plug (1) and injector (6) in the head protrude into the chamber. The piston crown contains a flat recess (10) and a deeper one (9), forming parts of the chamber, the plug being mounted near one axis of the latter while the injector is to the side. Under heavy load, the latter delovers in a first stage into the flat recess and in a second one into the deeper recess.
