A variable-frequency microwave generator (12) generates an electromagnetic field in a microwave resonance chamber (1) in which there are situated a sample-carrier chamber (3) not absorbing microwaves and an open capacitive antenna (2), the resonance chamber (1) and the sample-carrier chamber (3) being set in motion relative to each other, so as to provide a linear signal that can be correlated with the content of unburnt matter in the coal ash.
