The present invention relates to an isolated C-terminal fragment of pro-interleukin 1 beta comprising a protein sequence having a molecular weight of 20-22 kD or an N-terminal truncation thereof, incorporating an interleukin-1 beta converting enzyme (ICE) cleavage site, the fragment being cleavable by ICE to produce active IL-1 beta , and the cleavage product thereof.
