OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS

Optical communications networks are described which operate on the packet-switched basis using variable length packets with increased buffer storage achieved using a reduced number of time-delay channels. Time-delay channels are divided into a plurality of links connected in series including wavelength sensitive converters. An algorithm is used to route the packets through the links in a controllable multi-wavelength basis.
