A computer network 1 comprises a central server 3 and a computer 5 which is connected to the central server by a data link 7. The data link 7 comprises one of a number of different communications access methods, the chosen method being in accordance with the operation of application software within the computer 5. The application software monitors a parameter relating to the data flow over the data link 7, by means of the communications access method in use. If the parameter is, or falls below, a predefined level, the software operates to switch the data link 7 to use a different communications access method having a parameter which is at least equal to the predefined level.
