[Class 55 (ii).] Combustible gas containing unstable olefines is preheated to a temperature of 300-800‹ F. in a heat-exchanger 1, raised to a higher temperature by mixing with hot gaseous products from combustion of a hydrocarbon and then passed into a reaction chamber 2 filled with catalytic refractory material 3 to convert the olefines into stabler products. The gas flows through the heat-exchanger under pressure and the products from the reaction vessel return to the heat-exchanger by pipe 11 to an outlet 13. Air and steam may be mixed with the gas before passage through the contact material. The latter may consist of firebrick, with or without aluminium phosphate or oxide, iron oxide or thoria. The catalytic effect is enhanced by the presence of sulphur dioxide in the gas mixture to be treated and the latter may be supplied under a pressure of 50 to 175 pounds per square inch.</p> |
