PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst carrier suitable for hydrodesulfurization reaction, hydrodenitrification reaction, hydrogenation reaction and hydroisomerization reaction of hydrocarbon and a method for producing catalyst using the same. SOLUTION: A catalyst carrier contains a considerable amt. of oxide of at least one IVB metal of a periodic table of elements, for example, zirconium oxide and also contains silica and a mass ratio of the amt. of oxide of the IVB group metal and the amt. of silica contained in the carrier is 5-70 and this IVB metal oxide has a crystal form and the specific surface area of the carrier is 160 m2/g or more. A catalyst has the active phase deposited on this carrier and containing platinum, palladium, Co or Ni as a VIII group metal or a compd. thereof and Mo or W as a VIB group metal or a compd. thereof.
