PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an inorganic flocculant of an iron compound useful as a water treating agent by preparing it from a basic iron (III) sulfate solution obtained by dissolving an iron ore containing at least a specified percent in weight of FeOOH as Fe3+ with sulfuric acid. SOLUTION: An iron ore containing at least 30 wt.% of FeOOH as Fe3+ is used. Iron hydroxide ores called brown iron ore. needle iron ore, and scale iron ore are named, and brown iron ore is used preferably. This iron ore is crushed by a crusher into approximately 500μm or below and dissolved with a sulfuric acid solution to produce a basic iron (III) sulfate solution. at least about 10 wt.% of a total iron concentration as Fe is necessary, and the quantity of Fe2+ should be about 0.1% or below. The concentration of sulfuric acid is preferably about 30-50 wt.% or below. This water treating agent can be produced at an extremely low cost and is excellent in clarification effect and flocculation/dew atering effect.
