PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost ink jet recorder wherein a cap member can be surely positioned with respect to a nozzle in both directions of a scanning direction of a recording head carriage and a scanning direction of a recording medium. SOLUTION: In a recording head carriage 3, positioning walls 14a, 14b each being in a U shape and tapered narrower toward a tip are formed on a portion in the vicinity of two nozzle section 3b, 3c. An engagement pin 14c is provided to a cap carriage lower 44 corresponding to a moving passage for the positioning walls 14a, 14b. By engaging the positioning wall 14a with the engagement pin 14c, a cap member 9d is positioned by moving in two directions of a moving direction of the recording head carriage 3 and a scanning direction of a recording medium by virtue of the movement of the recording head carriage 3. It is not necessary to raise an accuracy of a component in order to position the cap member 9d in the scanning direction of the recording medium, thereby lowering the cost of the recorder.
